Morecambe Illuminations

We have all grown to love the famous resort of Blackpool however we know many of you have links with the North West's two other resorts - Morecambe & Southport. Feel free to discuss them in here.

Morecambe Illuminations

Postby Zim Flyer » Sun Sep 06, 2009 12:13 pm

I found out the other day that Morecambe used to have illuminations, did anyone ever see them and were they any good?

I found this site which says they ended in 1996 with the bloke who played Reg Holdworth doing the honours of switching them on:

This not so brilliant site has some old postcards of the illuminations there:

Since Morecambe scrapped their lights, they have declined further so the warning for Blackpool seems obvious, do not take the short term cheap option of cutting spending on our lights but instead keep investing in them.
We owe it to the next generation to leave things better than how we found them.

I too remember Morecambe illuminations back in the 1970's. I remember sitting on the wall of the station opposite The Midland Hotel. Me, my sisters and parents would be eating red hot fish & chips from paper (not from a polystyrene box), watching Morecambe & Wise switch on the illuminations in front of The Midland Hotel.

I also remember Helen Worth (Coronation Street's "Gail Platt") switching on the lights in the 1990's? (either 80's or 90's), I have a photo of her (not very clear, but you can see it's her) riding down Morecambe sea-front on top of an open top bus.

Oh how I loved Morecambe. Spent all my childhood going there for holidays and day trips with my parents. I have a special place in my heart for Morecambe....always will have!

Mark (Leeds).

much the same i remember it as a smaller blackpool, unfortunately as the tourist market shrank the council started cutbacks which ultimately ended in the decline of the resort into what it is today.Makes you wonder that if there had been investment in the piers and illuminations perhaps frontierland and most of the seafront attractions would still be there today

I imagine it's just like a ghost town these days?

I will be in town on good Friday, 2nd April when we (Crewe) play them.
